Shawn Dell Joyce selected for the 2013 Leadership Orange Award

Shawn Dell Joyce will be presented with the Leadership Orange Award at the organization’s 20th Anniversary Best Party. Ever! on April 11, 2013, announced Karolyn Osborne, executive director. This annual award recognizes an individual who lives or works in Orange County and, through their ideas, actions and accomplishments has had a direct and positive impact on the quality of life in the county.

Shawn Dell Joyce is the founder of the Wallkill River School, a nonprofit artists' cooperative that runs an art school and fine art gallery in Montgomery, N.Y., as well as a plein air art workshop series on local farms and open spaces.  The mission of the School, is to preserve open space through art and art activism, and create economic opportunities for Orange County artists. 

As Executive Director Shawn runs the gallery at the School, representing 40 Orange County based artists featured in monthly exhibits.  The School has an art leasing program, and an apprenticeship program to encourage the next generation of emerging artists.  Shawn also is a teacher in the art school, offering fine art instruction for adults and children.  Her vision in forming the Wallkill River School has been recognized as "Orange County's first homegrown arts movement" by Hudson Valley Magazine and is positively acclaimed by the Times Herald Record.

Shawn lives her belief in farm preservation, political activism and environmental sustainability.  She brings the community together through her active writing and frequent publication in many national and local newspapers and magazines. Her columns can be found on Creators.com and ZestofOrange.com and focus on topics such as “Paper or Plastic,” “Alternatives to Road Salt,” “Orange County Staycations” and “Green New Year’s Resolutions.”  She is a nationally syndicated weekly newspaper columnist who writes “Sustainable Living,” featured locally in the Wallkill Valley Times and Poughkeepsie Journal Sunday paper.

Shawn developed collaborative relations between the Wallkill River School and the Orange County Land Trust and Black Rock Forest Consortium as a means of continuing the political awareness of land preservation and sustainability. 

Shawn is recognized as a leader in our community and was selected for the “Tribute to Woman of Achievement in Arts” in 2009 from the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson and the YWCA of Orange County.  She recently received Orange Environment’s “Sustainable Art” award.
